TikToker jokes about how people say ‘Hello’ in Malta are racially dragged into comments
A TikTok video that sheds light on how some Maltese greet each other is getting a reaction on the internet, with many people attacking the TikToker skin color in their anger at the words they used.
“In Malta, we don’t say ‘morning'” creator @Austinegodstime started his video while using a popular format on Lovin Malta’s TikTok page.
The meme format, which generally sees something silly about Maltese life that follows as a punchline for setup, is generally welcomed in Maltese cyberspace. However, @Austinegodstime’s punchline didn’t go down well with some viewers.
‘We say -‘hello my friend madonna, ” continues, with reference to g[all-fra]i kuss in Maltese which is commonly heard.
However, some people were not having this, and let their prejudice shine brightly through their comments.
“Black trash,” said a Maltese man.
“Bongu, a piece of garbage,” another said, with other comments posing much harsher threats and offenses, some even targeting Mohammed, the founder of the world religion of Islam.
“Because you swear, comedian? ”
However, people were quick to recount that he picked up the language from somewhere.
“You did it that way – aren’t you seeing your comments?” said one person.
“They are taking this too far, strangely,” said a young Maltese woman.
“And then we say that the Maltese are not racist,” said a third.
A foreign man replied, clearly aware of how some Maltese could go online: “Bro, try to respect their religion”.
However, someone briefly went on to say: “Suddenly, all the Maltese people are religious and good people as if they had never sworn to themselves,” along with two emojis laughing in a very appropriate position.
Do you think that TikTok was being annoyed with Maltese life or causing it to be offended?
