Prague annually provides over 2 million crowns for intensive Czech courses

The draft of the Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding in the field of integration of young people with different mother tongues into secondary education between the capital of Prague was approved today. m Prague and the META organization. The capital is thus preparing an interest in a systemic solution of language support and support for young foreigners and pupils with different mother tongues (OMJ).
“Prague has been supporting the education of children with different mother tongues in pre-school, primary and secondary education for many years. It provides over 2 million crowns a year for these activities. For example, we support intensive courses in Czech as a second language at the Marjánka Primary School in Prague 6 and the Lyčkovo náměstí Primary School and Kindergarten in Prague 8, or courses for secondary school students who run a language school with the right to a state language exam in the capital city of Prague, ” said Vít Šimral, Prague’s councilor for education.
In the period from 1 August 2022 to 31 August 2027, META plans to carry out a project aimed at supporting the integration of young people with OMJ into secondary vocational education and at supporting secondary school teachers in educating pupils with OMJ. The project builds on projects called Click School and Don’t Give Up! in order to focus systemic language training and support for young people with OMJ so that we can use our educational potential, graduate from high school and then enter the labor market.
A total of 3 regions will be involved in the project, namely the Pilsen Region, the South Moravian Region and the capital. m Prague. The model of language preparation of pupils with OMJ for entering secondary school and its subsequent support during studies, which has been developing in Prague for 5 years, will then be gradually transferred to the first two regions.
The content of the project will be the implementation of six basic activities: improvement language courses, processing of teaching materials, networking and advocacy activities, creation of a network of coordinators, education and counseling for pedagogy, coordination of projects and PR activities.
“In addition, from the beginning of September this year, the Czech new system of financing language education for foreigners in kindergartens and primary schools began to apply from the regional office’s reserve, which will provide around 10 million crowns for the period until the end of this year,” added councilor Vít Šimral.
