Biomass: the weight of living things on earth!
Biomass: how much does humanity weigh in relation to living things? Already, know that biomass refers to the weight of all living organic matter, animals or plants, land or sea, existing on our planet.
If the figures remain estimates, we can retain some relevant information. Today the total biomass would weigh 550 gigatons. Plants alone represent more than 80% of living organisms, or 450 gigatons out of the 550. Be careful, in this case, it is the weight that is taken into account. Not the quantity.
All the animals represent 2 gigatons of the 550. This is very little, less than 0.3%.
Among these animals are molluscs, wild birds, insects, farm animals and even humans. The biomass of farmed birds, especially chickens, is three times that of all wild birds.
The same applies to cattle, sheep and pigs. They are 14 times heavier than all terrestrial wild mammals combined.
In addition, according to a study published in 2020, the weight of objects made by humans would exceed that of all of the terrestrial biomass!
