Best quality of life in Italy: Milan climbs into the Top 5
The annual ranking shows the cities where people live best in Italy. This year, several surprises stand out, starting with Milan, which gained 40 places in the standings. Parma conquers the summit.
The pandemic has undoubtedly given new parameters to the concept of “good living”. The annual ranking defining the best cities in Italy in terms of “quality of life”, drawn up by Italia Oggi and La Spazienza University in Rome, reveals many surprises in 2021.
Parma first, Milan fifth city in Italy
In general, in 63 cities out of the 107 studied, the quality of life is good or at least acceptable. But for the first time, the big cities of the North of the Boot is at the top of the 2021 ranking.
Starting with Parma, which stands out this year, and for the first time, as the city where we live in Italy. The city of Emilia Romagna has gained 38 places compared to last year. The cities of Turin, Milan, Trieste (40th to 7th), Bologna (27th to 4th) and Florence (31st to 6th) have also made a big leap forward. The Lombard capital has notably gained 40 places (Milan was 45th last year).
On the contrary, the smallest towns are retreating, and not only those in the South. These are, for example, Como, Varese, Udine, Rovigo, or even Prato and Nuoro.
The explanation put forward by the authors of the ranking is based on the better capacity of metropolises to have faced the pandemic.
Quality of life in Italy: the parameters of the ranking
The report is based on the analysis of eight main categories: Business and Work, Education and Training, Environment, Safety, Leisure and Tourism.
Quality of life between the North and the South of Italy: an accentuated gap
The last places in the standings still see Syracuse, Foggia, Naples and Crotone. Only 10 northern cities appear in the second half of the ranking (Vercelli, Rovigo, Prato, Rimini, Como, Asti, La Spezia, Imperia, Pistoia and Alessandria), while Rome is the only large city not to be part of the first half of the ranking of cities where people live best in Italy. The Italian capital even fell, from 50 to 54th position.
