The epidemic is easing in several coronavirus foci, but there is no reason to rejoice in Hungary yet
Hundreds took to the streets on Saturday in Leeuwarden, north of the Netherlands, according to NOS Dutch public service television, a crowd of mostly young people protesting against the restrictions imposed on a significant number of coronavirus infections.
In a city about 140 kilometers north of Amsterdam, people used fireworks and smoke grenades to express their dissatisfaction with the restrictions.
Assault police later managed to oust protesters from the city’s main square. Although nearly 85 percent of the Dutch adult population is fully vaccinated against the virus, on Thursday, the country’s administrative government announced a three-week department to limit the fight against the epidemic. The provisions came into force on Saturday.
Chief Executive Mark Rutte at the press conference on Thursday justified the decision with extreme pressure on health care, adding that more interventions would have to be postponed due to the growing number of people being hospitalized.
Under the new restrictions, large shopping malls and restaurants will be closed at 8 p.m., and shops and service providers selling non-essential items will be closed at 6 p.m. Sports matches must be held without an audience, but cinemas and theaters can still receive visitors.
According to Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore’s Saturday morning summary, 2,323,479 people have been infected in the 17 million in the Netherlands since the start of the epidemic, and 19,171 have died from the complications of Covid-19 disease caused by the coronavirus.
