Prague 8 wants to build a monument to Jindřiška Nováková. The girl who took Kubiš’s bike after the assassination – ČT24 – Czech Television
Jindřiška Nováková was only fourteen years old when the event of one of the largest resistance events of the Second World War took place. At that time, she helped eliminate the bloodied bike on which Jan Kubiš left the site of the attack on Reinhard Heydrich.
According to researcher Jaroslav Čvančara, Mrs. Nováková then urged Jindřiška to take the bike very cleverly on foot to their apartment.
But two women saw her and told her. The Nazis then arrested 250 girls her age and took them to the Gestapo headquarters for police reconstruction.
“The Gestapo ordered each girl to lead a bike. Jindřiška was shortlisted by about twenty girls. Nevertheless, the women did not recognize her, “the researcher explained.
A monument to all women
Her monument will now be erected three hundred yards from where the bike led, near her former school. The monument should dominate the courtyard of Bohumil Hrabal Elementary School and should also be visible from the street, said Prague 8 councilor Michal Švarc (Patriots for Prague 8).
But it will not only resemble Jindřiška and her family, but all members of the resistance. “Our intention is to pay tribute to all the women who have laid down their lives. There are men everywhere on the monuments, preferably in uniforms, preferably with a weapon in hand, “the councilor added.
The councilor of Prague 8 will announce a competition for the official design of the monument by the end of November. They would like to unveil it in October 2022 at the latest – on the anniversary of Jindřiška’s death.
