Three places for “mommy” food in Athens
The Gastronomer suggests three places for “mommy” food in Athens. Here we go for quality, home cooked food.
Philip
Filippou will soon be happy, the kitchen with the glued white tablecloths that has been operating since 1923 at the same place in Kolonaki. Warm atmosphere, old urban courtesy and the well-known dishes that manoula made are offered here. The flavors are simple, clean and the care is evident in every dish – from the tomato salad that comes with the tomatoes and cucumbers lined up separately, sprinkled with good oil. Looking at the old photos on the walls, since Filippou was sold wine with barrels and soil down, one can order, depending on the season, from beans and pastitsio to giants and lemonade in the oven.

Economou
For the baked lamb with the honeyed potatoes? For the excellent cabbage stuffing? For the unplayed oils in the summer? The pies with the thick sheet? All of us who go to Oikonomou but still return more for the general sense of care that irrigates the store from the glittering stalls to the good bread (now rare in a tavern) and the miracle olive oil. Since 1930, the history of the famous kitchen of Petralona counts with its constant clientele. This includes well-known painters whose works adorn the walls of the store.

Athens
It started operating in Lykourgos in 1932, near the Magistrates’ Court, to offer food to employees, lawyers and cities of the center. Homemade dishes such as briam, bean soup and bagpipes came out of his kitchen at that time, but also more “urban” ones, such as beef, fish and lamb.
Today the Athenian
The opening hours are exclusively daily at noon and the menu has beef noua, lamb Roumelis, soutzoukaki, pasta with chicken, grilled salmon, bean soup and a dozen more cooked.

3 addresses for vegan food in the center
Where we go for delicious, sweet and savory vegetarian dishes in the city center.
Cats & Monsters
Good news for those who are used to looking for vegan ice cream and find only frustrating fruit sorbets. A couple from Germany, Franz and Claudia, have set up in Exarchia the first gelato shop in Athens that serves ice cream without animal products. Every day the two of them prepare about twenty different flavors based on soy milk, rice or oats. And praline have carrot cake ice cream and apple pie now that the first colds have started. Recently we tried pumpkin ice cream with spices and caramelized pumpkin seeds!

Keenkies
Carbonara donuts? Or maybe pasticcio donuts? Keenkies takes care of the moments when we need “dirty” food that remains plant-based. As the donut is vegan anyway, the people in charge of the exarchate store make sure that its accompaniments are the same. In addition to the unexpected savory versions, we also find sweet ones: with vegetable hazelnut praline and salted almonds, with agave syrup, tahini and walnuts, with bitter chocolate, natural butter and biscuit and other exuberant options.

Bamboo Vegan
There is more room in the tiny grocery store of Exarcheia than one can imagine. The shelves are full of a variety of organisms, organic foods and specialty products such as cheese and meat alternatives, yogurts, sauces, ice creams and pastries – all based on plant raw materials. And although the corner store started eight years ago, operating exclusively as a vegan mini market, part of it gradually evolved into a cafe from which customers are provided with small ready-made meals that are far from what is expected. Depending on the day, they bake sausage pies, pizzas or hearty sandwiches and omelettes from chickpeas and nutritional yeast.
