The NDR Radiophilharmonie is currently in Salzburg for a guest performance. Between rehearsals, PCR tests and concerts, chief conductor Andrew Manze takes time to stroll through the city.
Chief conductor Andrew Manze has just rehearsed Anton Bruckner’s eighth symphony with the NDR Radiophilharmonie. Now he comes out, well wrapped up with a leather jacket and a peaked cap, because it is quite chilly.
“Such a great city,” says Manze. “It is a privilege for us to be able to play in this wonderful city of music and culture. All around me are the concert halls, the auditorium of the university. Over there is the cathedral. We’ll take a little walk.”
Entry drug for Salzburg: apple strudel and schnitzel
Just a few steps through an alley and Manze stands in front of the mighty cathedral. “In the Sound of Music there are three Salzburgs for me: the Salzburg that I saw things as a child, in the well-known musical film ‘Meine Lieder – Meine Träume’ (German version, editor’s note) with Julie Andrews.
Apple strudel and schnitzel with noodles were Manzes’ gateway drug for Salzburg, where the musical is set. “And then of course there is Mozart. He is everywhere here. One is constantly reminded that he is the most famous son in town. But I spent a lot of time playing the baroque violin. And here in the cathedral, Heinrich Ignaz has Franz Biber , the excellent baroque violinist himself, also performed his Salzburg Mass. He has played here in many houses and is very close to where he is used to.
Break with world famous candy
Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber Krieg from 1670 court conductor in Salzburg. His house at Rathausplatz 2 is within sight of Mozart’s birthplace at Getreidegasse 9. “The NDR Radiophilharmonie and I spent many hours working hard on Mozart’s music, also great for our new album with late Mozart symphonies, now his and walking through different streets like he did back then.
Time for a little break – with the most famous sweet in town. And Manze discovers that Mozart balls are now facing competition – from so-called Bach cubes.
Taste test: Mozart balls vs. Bach cubes
The chocolates – one with the image of Mozart, the other with that of Bach, are quickly unwrapped: “Bach or Mozart – let’s see who tastes better. Bach tastes very baroque, and Mozart very classic. But both taste delicious.” The chocolate taste still on the power tongue Manze on the way over the bridge to the other side of the Salzach. A short stop on one of the chairs in Marina Abramovich’s installation entitled “Spirit of Mozart”. The view goes over to the old town, behind which the sunlight towers the mighty fortress.
We continue on the bank, and then a short distance up to the right into a green oasis. The last stop on the walk: “Here I am in the Mirabell Gardens, right behind the Mozarteum, the famous music academy. The NDR Radiophilharmonie and I play a symphony by Anton Bruckner here in Salzburg, among other things. And Bruckner has twice replaced the director Mozarteum advertised. What a shame that it was rejected both times, because today Salzburg could also be a Bruckner city, just as it is a Mozart city. “
