Glunozumab®: this is the name of the drug that could be revolutionary in the world of medicine, if it passes all clinical trials. It makes it possible to fight against Stroke (stroke).
The institute Blood and Brain @ Caen-Normandie (co-founded by the University of Caen Normandie, Inserm and the CHU de Caen Normandie) and the biotechnology start-up, Therapeutic Lily Work on it within Cyceron at Caen. The inventor of the Glunozumab® antibody is none other than the world specialist in stroke, Denis Vivien, professor at the Caen CHU and scientific director of the Blood and Brain @ Caen-Normandie institute.
Treat stroke as soon as you arrive in the emergency room
“There is already a molecule that works to unclog arteries but it causes side effects in some cases: inflammation and destruction of the benefits”, explains Professor Vivien. With this new antibody, “inflammation will be blocked and neuronal death will be avoided”.
In theory, with this drug, we could treat the stroke as soon as the fire truck or as soon as the patient arrives at the emergency room.
First clinical trials at the end of 2023?
A revolutionary drug when we know that 140,000 new strokes occur each year in France. “It is the leading cause of death in women and the 2nd leading cause of dementia in France,” explains the professor. The causes ? “Diabetes, hypertension, tobacco. There are no warning signs for stroke, ”continues Denis Vivien.
A fundraising of several million euros is underway, it should end in 3 or 4 months. A second tour will then be organized. “Lys Therapeutics hopes to conduct the first clinical trials on humans at the end of 2023, the beginning of 2024”, concludes the professor.
