Deputy Aécio Neves says that Portugal must be Brazil’s “great and definitive partner”
“I have always defended, for a long time, (…) I already said this when I was a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, that Portugal must be a great and definitive partner of Brazil, together with the European Union in every way, with benefits , obviously common for both countries “, affirmed Aécio Neves.
The deputy was one of those responsible for organizing an international seminar that took place in Lisbon, at the end of this week.
“I think that we could move forward in the discussion towards a differentiated fiscal regime so that Brazilian products, such as Brazilian companies, can trade commercially from here with other regions in Europe, with other European countries,” he added.
For the deputy, Portugal “without a doubt” should be “the most strategic” of Brazil’s partners, whether for historical and cultural issues, but “also, pragmatically, for economic issues, for trade issues”.
As they occur at a time when the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate seek to create a lasting relationship between the country and the Member States of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
But also when Mercosur, a commercial bloc that Brazil integrates with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, seeks to negotiate with the European Union (EU) according to which it increases the country’s trade activity with that bloc.
The free trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur was concluded in June 2019, after 20 years of reconciliation, and is now awaiting approval from the member countries of the two blocs.
Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor are the nine member states of the CPLP.
