Joker Louis Schaub saved Austria from the next defeat in the World Cup qualifying with a brace against Israel. That gives 1. FC Köln self-confidence.
Klagenfurt. Somebody was inspired by Anthony Modeste (33)! Louis Schaub (26) shot Austria on Friday evening (November 12, 2021) with two goals in a 4-2 win over Israel.
After Tony double pack comes Louis double pack!
After Cologne’s 2-0 cup success in Stuttgart, Schaub had put on Modestes jacket with the number 27 and joked: “I hope that I will get his strength.”
Back then, Tony had shot FC to victory with two goals after coming on as a substitute. Schaub is now doing the same with the national team!

The offensive man sat on the bench in the home game in the World Cup qualifying against Israel until the 58th minute, then came in for Alessandro Schöpf from Bielefeld – and really turned it up.
62nd Minute: Schaub hits with a deep left-footed shot from the fantastic distance to equalize 2-2.
72nd minute: After a nice plug pass from Marko Arnautovic, the Cologne player remains very cool, lets an opponent slip into the void and turns the game for his Ösis.
That gives the FC and the Bundesliga self-confidence! Bayern star Marcel Sabitzer put the lid on in the 84th minute with his 4-2. Real Madrid’s David Alaba (29) after the final whistle: “The win was very important for us, coming back after 1-0 and 2-1.” Moldova will then be waiting on Monday evening (November 15th).

Austria hopes for play-offs
However, the Austrians can only qualify for the World Cup via a detour. Should at least four teams from the quintet Belgium, Italy, Spain, France and Wales finish first or second in their qualifying groups, the play-offs will wait for Schaub & Co.
The reason for this is the group victory in Pool B of the Nations League last season. In their World Cup qualifying group F, the Austrians are only fourth. The Alpine republic was in France for the last time in a World Cup in 1998.
Schaub’s FC colleague Dejan Ljubicic (24) only sat on the bench against Israel, Florian Kainz (29) was not nominated for the November internationals by national coach Franco Foda (55).
