The effects of the Corona German classification of Austria as a high-risk area for the domestic winter season start from Sunday are likely to be enormous.
“We are facing a wave of cancellations by families over Christmas and New Year’s Eve,” said positive Walter Veit, Vice President and Salzburg State Chairman of the Austrian Hotel Association, in the APA conversation on Friday. In total, he expects around 50 percent fewer guests to come to Austria and Salzburg.
“We have around 40 percent German guests in winter,” explained Veit. In the summer, 85 percent of holidaymakers from abroad were vaccinated, but “the majority of the guests who book hotels over Christmas and New Year’s Eve have children under the age of twelve”. If his fears come true and a large number of families from Germany cancel, “it will be a disaster”.
Classic family hotels that offer family apartments and specialized children’s hotels are particularly affected by the travel warning. Veit even fears that some of these hotels will not open over the Christmas holidays. Tourists without children would spend most of their winter holidays in quieter seasons anyway.
The state must compensate for the expected financial decline, demanded the hotelier who runs the Hotel Enzian in Obertauern. “We need a guarantee for our employees that they will be paid in full, even if there is little work. Otherwise they will change industries.” The five percent VAT reduction, which is to expire at the end of the year, must in any case remain in place.
