City trip in Advent: You can experience that in Munich in winter – Panorama
From star gastronomy to the Christmas market, from the new stages to the botanical garden – this is how you can enjoy the cold season in Munich.
Stuttgart – Every season of the year has its own charm – winter in Munich is especially popular when it comes to warming mulled wine mugs, or when you go to a warm inn after a long walk on the Isar to enjoy a hearty Bavarian meal.
You can dine particularly stylish in Munich’s star restaurants, for example in the Alois restaurant in the Dallmayr, in the vegetarian Tian on the Viktualienmarkt or in the Schwarzreiter day bar. Those who stop here for lunch and not traditionally for dinner get a place more spontaneously and can also be pleased that the menus are often a lot cheaper during the day than in the evening.
Enjoy culinary art and culture in Munich
Munich’s new theaters, which opened last year, promise cultural rather than culinary delights: The Volkstheater has moved into a theater building in the Schlachthofviertel – the one with several stages, a restaurant and a beer garden. The Isarphilharmonie was also reopened on the alternative quarter of the Gasteig – architecture and acoustics in particular are praised here – the court theater in Sendling and the Schwere Reiter theater, which has a new building in the creative quarter on the same site.
A tour of the New Town Hall is definitely worthwhile when visiting Munich. Its glockenspiel inspires again and again and inside the guests marvel at the magnificent legal library, the neo-Gothic conference room or the world-famous town hall balcony. From there, FC Bayern traditionally greets the fans at its championship celebrations.
Christmas markets, Christmas village and medieval market
An atmospheric walk through the Christmas markets should not be missing in the run-up to Christmas. The one on Marienplatz is not only one of the most popular, it is also a real Munich original: Its roots go back to the 14th century. Those who like it more contemplative can visit the Christmas village in the Residenz or the medieval market on Wittelsbacherplatz.
