Brussels urges Portugal to adopt EU legislation on fixed-term employment contracts – O Jornal Económico
The European Commission has initiated an infringement procedure against Portugal for non-compliance with European Union legislation on fixed-term employment contracts, urging the country to apply these rules to teachers under fixed-term contracts within two months.
“Portuguese legislation provides less favorable employment conditions for teachers hired on a fixed term basis who work in Portuguese public schools than for permanent teachers, namely in terms of salary and seniority”, says the community executive, in a statement released this Friday -fair .
Brussels “expresses concerns based on the principle of non-discrimination”, recalling that the framework agreement only allows for differences in treatment if justified by objective reasons, which it considers does not exist in Portuguese legislation.
“Furthermore, Portuguese legislation does not provide for necessary measures to prevent abuses that result from the use of employment contracts or employment relationships of use of successive fixed-term contracts applicable in the territory of the Azores”. Portugal now sets two months to correct the deficiencies identified by the Commission. Otherwise, a Commission may send you a reasoned opinion.
