Why is obsolete equipment rescuing Lithuania from Astravas?
Obsolete equipment rescues Lithuania from the Astrava nuclear power plant, reports LNK.
Two devices in the Radiation Protection Center have not been used for 20 years. Whether they would withstand a possible accident in Astrave – the center doubts.
The situation is similar with a unique radioactive pollution measuring station. There are only four of these in the world. One – especially for Lithuania. However, now the Radiation Protection Center wants to get rid of it, and more precisely – to replace it with a new one, because the equipment that has been counting for a decade is broken.
New dosimeters are also required. Nobody produces them now. If the dosimeters break down, there would be no one to repair them.
The Deputy Minister of the Interior has the answer why the Radiation Protection Center protects Lithuania from obsolete devices from Astravas.
“Apparently, for a long time there has been a focus on preparation with the same funds provided in the budget of state institutions, and I think that was the biggest problem,” said Deputy Interior Minister Vitaly Dmitriev.
Not much better for the police either. In the event of an explosion, Astrave officers may suddenly have to look for things like outdoor lights or biotoilets. But what worries the police more is fuel stocks.
The Fire and Rescue Department did not check the antiquity of its equipment. However, the systems used during the nuclear accident are about to be upgraded.
Governments promise that the Special Forces and the Radiation Protection Center will not be left without the missing equipment. However, there is no guarantee that the necessary devices and sensors will arrive on time and will not get stuck in public procurement.
Next year, 17 million was planned for the protection of the Astrava government alone. euros.
