The Netherlands extradites Syrian suspect (32) to the US | Inland
De Telegraaf previously spoke extensively with Jacob, the father of a girl who was abused at the age of 9. Jacob and his wife, both from Syria, noticed in 2016 that something was wrong with their daughter. Suspicion fell on Husein A., a distant relative and friend. “When that boy came to the US ten years ago, I communicate with him,” Jacob told this newspaper. “He often came to our house and we went on a picnic.”
Husein A. was regarded as a textbook example of an asylum seeker presented excellently. After coming to the US from Damascus, he had made a rapid career in aerospace engineering. He represents himself as a spokesperson for the interests of Syrian refugees and systems as a role model for other Syrians in newspapers and on television.
It all came crashing down when the 9-year-old girl confessed to a school counselor what Husein had done. The school called the police. “I was shocked, furious, sad, I cried,” Jacob said. “My wife was hysterical. I started adding things together and the puzzle pieces fell into place. Openly I understood why Husein sometimes behaved strangely. He sometimes looked caught up when we entered. Yet in my craziest dreams I had not expected this. He is related to me, but now I see him as a criminal.”
“He appears as a role model for other Syrians in and on television”
Agents notify Husein A. as a suspect and he confesses. “There are no words in my English vocabulary that can erase my terrible past mistakes,” he wrote. And “I abused my position of trust and caused great harm to my family. I take full responsibility for my actions and will do everything to rectify the situation.”
The prosecution wants the accused to receive a more than seven years. However, Jacob already feared that Husein would try to get out of his sentence and are proved right: in 2018, the suspect slipped out of the country. The judge issued an arrest warrant, but Husein A. was missing.
Jacob set out to discover where his daughter’s assailant had gone. After much detective work and with the help of detectives, he found him in Sweden and then in the Netherlands. A Facebook photo betrayed zoom. Husein had pretended to be a refugee and had been granted asylum here. He has an uncle in Brabant, who may have helped to keep Husein hidden. The uncle denied this to this newspaper: “I only heard that he was in the Netherlands when Husein called from prison.”
