Animals – Hanover – Invasive animal species are spreading: Hunting impaired – society
Hanover (dpa / lni) – Invasive animal species such as raccoons and nutria continue to spread in Lower Saxony. This is shown by so-called hunting routes, including the hunters’ booty, as the hunting booty in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture and the state hunters announced on Thursday. Invasive species are actually alien species that can nonetheless spread and damage the biological balance.
Compared to the previous year, there was a record for nutrias hunted – an increase of 7.3 percent to 44,395 animals, recorded by raccoons with an increase of 4.7 percent to 21,368 animals. However, massive fractional numbers die in the case of hares or pheasants in view of the corona pandemic – there were hardly any hunts for small game.
“The effects of the corona pandemic with the sometimes very rapidly changing regulatory requirements for carrying out the hunts were a great challenge,” emphasizes Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast (CDU). The successful hunting of the invasive species nutria and raccoon shows “that hunters in Lower Saxony have taken on responsibility even in these times”. Helmut Dammann-Tamke, the President of the Lower Saxony State Hunters’ Association, announced in February that the record result of the previous hunting year would probably not be repeated in view of the pandemic.
For wild boars, there was the third highest result recently: After the record of the previous hunting year, hunters killed 12.1 percent fewer wild boars and thus a total of 61,960 animals. Given the fluctuations and the exception of the past year, this was to be expected. “We continue to hunt the wild boar intensely. The third highest hunting distance ever achieved Spiegel this again very clearly,” said Dammann-Tamke. “This is also important against the background of the prevention of African swine fever.”
The prey of mouflon and roe deer sank slightly, of red deer and fallow deer it was the lightest. The situation was difficult with small game species such as the brown hare or the pheasant – the decrease in distance was over 50 percent due to the consequences of the pandemic. The hunting distance for raccoon dogs fell by 6.9 percent to 4,386 animals.
