You can observe a half moon slipping under Saturn then Jupiter this week
The Moon reserves a nice astronomical spectacle two days in a row, November 10 and 11, 2021. It slips under Saturn then under Jupiter, Wednesday then Thursday evening. Here’s how to take advantage of it!
Barely a few days after its approximation with the brilliant Venus, the Moon comes to make its way near two other planets (from our point of view): Wednesday 10 then Thursday 11 November 2021, the natural satellite of the Earth takes up residence very close to Saturn then Jupiter in the sky – two planets observable with the naked eye, if the weather is obviously favorable.
Here’s how to enjoy the show on both evenings, using the entertainment that Numerama has put together.
What do we see on Wednesday evening?
On the evening of Wednesday, November 10, the Moon slips just below Saturn. You can easily spot the big planet, just above the satellite. Jupiter is not far, on the left.
What do we see Thursday evening?
On the evening of Thursday, November 11, the Moon moved: it now borders Jupiter, just below it, and has abandoned Saturn, which does not stay very far to its right.
When to observe this celestial trio?
To make the most of this conjunction, you must first know what are the hours of leverage and setting of the Moon, Wednesday then Thursday. Note that November 11 corresponds to the phase of the first quarter, which means that we are contemplating a half moon.
Dated | Wednesday 10 | Thursday 11 |
The sink | 2:10 p.m. | 14:42 |
sofa | 22:33 | 11:51 p.m. |
And here are the hours of visibility for Saturn and Jupiter.
Planet | Jupiter | Saturn |
Visibility hours | 5:20 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. | 5:20 p.m. – 10 p.m. |
Constellation | Capricorn |
Therefore, we can recommend observing after 5:20 p.m. on both evenings. On Wednesdays, if you want to see Saturn, go until 10pm; on Thursday, you have more time to hope to contemplate Jupiter, before 11:30 p.m. All this can be admired in the direction of the south, in the constellation Capricorn.
To see such a spectacle again, it will then be necessary to wait for the month of December: the crescent moon passes between Jupiter and Saturn on the evening of Wednesday, December 8.
