Nobody knows the Salzburg underground as well as he does – and what is expected of him. Kurt Repetschnigg is the sewer foreman and responsible for the maintenance of the entire sewer system. Each pipe and sewer in the city must be inspected at least once every five years. Equipped with a gas warning device, protection and fall protection, Repetschnigg goes and crawls to places that were once designed as connecting passages by Salzburg’s bishops and were only converted into sewers much later. Many controls can now be carried out using camera drives. And a high level of high-tech is now also being used to clean the sewers. This is also necessary to get problematic substances such as wet wipes out of the sewer system. Kurt Repetschnigg and his men do not experience much appreciation for their work. It is much more likely that drivers complain loudly when they have to wait a short while for an open manhole cover.
