Shulginov: Russia can use coal to generate electricity in 2050 – Economy and business
MOSCOW, November 10. / TASS /. Russia can keep coal in domestic consumption for electricity generation in 2050 as well. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Nikolai Shulginov in an interview with the newspaper “Kommersant“which is published on Wednesday.
“According to our forecasts, by 2050, in the energy balance of Russia in terms of internal consumption of coal, it will still remain. It can lead to serious consequences,” he said.
Coal is one of the dirtiest sources for electricity generation in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, Russia takes a commitment until the release of the emission in 2060.
“We must make smart and economically informed decisions. Natural processes must take place.
The minister added that during 2022, an analysis of the possibilities of increasing the mineral extraction tax on steam coal will be carried out – after the tax will be increased for coking coal from 2022. “But even if there is an increase, it will be small,” he explained.
Shulginov also noted that the initiative to introduce a minimum volume of coal sales on the exchange at the level of 10% of the volume of sales on the domestic market can be implemented as early as next year.
