Russia may reach star neutrality before 2060 – Rossiyskaya Gazeta
Russia can achieve new scientific technologies and finance. Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk spoke about this at the UN Climate Conference in Glasgow.
“Speaking of achieving this goal by 2060, this does not mean that Russia will not be able to achieve this goal earlier than this date. Success depends on the availability of new technologies and funds to finance this transition,” he said. Overduction approaches “eliminate discriminatory and restrictive measures that close countries to technology and financial resources” that are used to create new sustainable infrastructure, capture and storage systems, decarbonization, energy efficiency and the transition to clean energy. “And if someone obstructs the process, everyone will understand who is to blame for the failure to achieve the climatic goals,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Another example: forests, tundra, agricultural land, swamps and seas.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Russian forests absorb 1.2–1.25 million tons of CO2 per year, and losses during fires average about 300 million tons of CO2. Approximately the same amount is lost during felling. Thus, the average annual net value in forests is equal to about 600-650 million tons of CO2. “Fighting with the help of one of our key functions,” the ministry noted.
The government approved the Strategy for Socio-Economic Development until 2050. It contains a number of measures, the implementation of which will lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 80% against the 1990 level. Compared to 1990, Russia has already reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 49% more than many other countries, the Ministry of Natural Resources noted. Now emissions amount to 2.1 billion tons of CO2, which is equivalent to 1.6 billion from the absorptive capacity of forests (0.5 billion tons).
The most important source of greenhouse gases in Russia is energy and the burning of fossil fuels. Industry is in second place, agriculture is in third place, and the waste sector closes the top 4. The first place is also occupied by energy, but the second is agriculture: rice growing and animal husbandry.
The Ministry of Economic Development promises to present an action plan for the implementation strategy next spring. It is assumed that it will include measures to support low-carbon technologies. “While 86% of our generation comes from solar, wind, nuclear and gas, as well as natural gas, Russia is one of the lowest emission balances in the world. We intend to maintain this leadership position by introducing blue and gas.” green “” Consumption and use of hydrogen fuel in the sectors of the economy, “- said Overchuk.
