Murňák (Pirates): Prague has a new methodology for rainwater management
At its meeting yesterday, the Prague City Council approved a new methodology for rainwater management.
The methodology is based on the Strategy of Adaptation of the Capital City of Prague. m of Prague on climate change, which the capital adopted in 2017 with the main goal of increasing long-term resilience. m of Prague against the manifestations of climate change.

Within the specific objectives of improving microclimatic conditions in Prague and reducing the negative impact of extreme temperatures, heat waves and urban heat island on the inhabitants of Prague and reducing the impact of extreme hydrological phenomena – torrential rains, floods and long-term drought in the capital. m of Prague, the city decided through these goals to fulfill the document Standards of rainwater management in the capital. m of Prague ensuring the optimization of the method of rainwater management in the capital. The above objectives are also part of the Climate Plan of the capital. m of Prague by 2030.
Rainwater management is a comprehensive approach to the drainage of populated areas, which emphasizes the preservation of the natural water regime, ie maximizing infiltration, evaporation and minimizing surface runoff. Rainwater management standards stipulate the possibilities of implementing close solutions in the field of rainwater management in the capital city of Prague. Their goal is to further inspire and motivate builders (private and public investors) to implement the proposed rainwater management solutions as much as possible, and to prove the maximum use of rainfall falls on public and private land.
“Prague lacked this methodology. We ourselves are witnessing what can cause one, if not more torrential rains. Or, conversely, a situation where several consecutive weeks do not rain at all. And the consequences of both the long-term drought and the high amount of precipitation are very burdensome not only for the inhabitants but also for the environment in Prague. It is necessary to learn to work with them and pass these standards on to the private sector, developers who build new housing estates to implement them in their projects, ”says Tomáš Murňák (Pirates), Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Infrastructure, Public Facilities and the Environment. ZHMP environment.
The basic management of rainwater is blue-green infrastructure, which supports the adaptation of the city in the broader context of ecosystem services. New construction processes concerning not only constructions, but also changes in drainage in existing buildings must be adjusted to a new view of the management of rainwater in urban areas. The new principles for civil engineering, communications, laying and renewal of utilities, greenery and water management structures must respect the priority of synergistic connection of water and greenery into a complex system, not demanding on operation and maintenance. Rainwater management standards in the capital city of Prague determine the rules for both the creation and reconstruction of buildings in the territory of Prague.
The basic rule from the point of view of HDV is the minimization of impermeable surfaces already within the urban-architectural solution, when paved areas with vegetation cover and the implementation of roofs with a retention layer are preferred. Another rule is the drainage of precipitation runoff to vegetation elements, accumulation and retention of precipitation water, but also into the soil and rock environment. The aim of the implementation of a close solution is to maximize the use of water at the point of fall and minimize the outflow of rainwater into the separate rainwater drainage.
