“People do not want to beg, they are ashamed of poverty,” says the director of a food bank in Prague
What you read in the interview
- How much food and to whom does the food bank give.
- That even people who previously managed to take care of themselves do not have food because of the pandemic.
- Why companies can donate food to a food bank, but no longer to a drugstore.
How much food does you get every day?
About four tons. Last year it was over two thousand tons.
What do supermarkets and companies give you most often?
There is a difference between what we need and what we have. Most often we get pastries, fruits and vegetables, dairy products. We have that in large quantities every day. And we’re trying to make it that day too, so it doesn’t go wrong.
We don’t throw anything away and we raise awareness about why it’s not good to waste food. We do lectures, seminars, workshops aimed at learning how to store food properly, to better estimate how much to buy and how much they need.
Who is hungry the most today?
Those who have been told about us come to us. Mostly people who go to social services, to the employment office or to some non-profit that provides them with social services. For example, people with mental illness, from shelters for mothers with children or bullyed women. Sometimes people even talk about each other.
Single mothers most often appear in our country, a large part of clients are single pensioners, and during the pandemic, a lot of people from the profession have gotten into trouble – tourism, hospitality, hospitality, theater or musicians.
Badly torn social network
People get food from you, but what about drugstores, which are often expensive for them?
It is usually the most expensive item. This is a bit of a problem because single mothers with small children need it the most. Diapers and other things around children are terribly expensive.
We get a drugstore
