Garnbret became the first woman to climb Route Onsight with a grade of 8c
STA, 9 November 2021 – Slovenian climber Janja Garnbret, who won a gold medal in sport climbing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, set a new milestone when she became the first woman to climb a route with a grade of 8c, the Mountaineering Association of Slovenia announced. .
After finishing the competition this season, she took a climbing holiday in Oliana, Spain, where she achieved her last feat. In early November, she managed to climb two different 8c climbing routes in two days.
Both ascents were done at a glance, which means that they were done on the first attempt on an unknown route, without prior information.
8c is currently the highest level of difficulty of a route ever successfully climbed by a climber.
“I never thought about trying to climb 8c, but I later decided to give it a try anyway. No pressure, just climbing, it just happened.” a 22-year-old Slovenian climber told planetmountain.com.
“It was my first trip to Oliana. The first day I tried some different, slightly easier routes and then harder,” she added.
“I didn’t panic, I was very calm. I think I climbed pretty fast and rested where I felt comfortable. I felt super good, very relaxed and focused,” Garnbret concluded.
