Capuchin Museum of Genoa presents “PresepiAmo”
Capuchin Museum of Genoa presents “PresepiAmo” a journey to discover stories, characters and popular traditions
Capuchin Museum of Genoa presents “PresepiAmo”, from Sunday 14 November 2021 until Sunday 30 January 2022
Inauguration Saturday 13 November at 16.00
Do you know the Ligurian tradition of the nativity scene? Come and discover it at the exhibition “PresepiAmo” a journey to discover stories, traditions, folk tales about the crib experiences of Liguria, from the splendor of the aristocratic eighteenth-century nativity scene by Anton Maria Maragliano to the more popular tradition represented by the “macaques” of Albissola.
An engaging art gallery dedicated to the Holy Family will make you discover the “inventor of the crib” St. Francis of Assisi painted by the Capuchin Bernardo Strozzi; the interesting use of color and light by Giovanni Battista Casoni, a pupil of Domenico Fiasella in his “Adoration of the Shepherds”; the crafts of Joseph and Mary painted by the school of Gerard David.
Did you know that the mechanical nativity scene of the Capuchins of Genoa is one of the oldest in Italy?
The mechanical nativity scene was in fact built by Franco Curti, a craftsman from Carmagnola (TO) at the beginning of the twentieth century, in about 12,000 hours of work and since then it has fascinated young and old with its magic.
It is spread over 40 m2 with over 150 characters in movement and is composed of the reconstruction of Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Bethany at the time of Jesus. Water falls, oriental panoramic views, degrading changes of light complete the evocative picture of the Nativity.
Even today it retains its original hand-made mechanisms operated by the leather straps of the old pedal sewing machines. But it doesn’t stop there! Are you ready to discover an exhibition within the exhibition?
This year the Capuchin Museum has welcomed the donation of Mrs. Livia Barbieri Pesce in its patrimony. It is a collection of ancient mother-of-pearl artifacts from the Holy Land, where a series of carteglorie frames stands out for the refinement and richness of the decoration.
The Museum has decided to receive this collection as a gift and shared with the city, so that this Christmas it will be enriched with the iridescent sheen of mother-of-pearl.
