Murňák (Pirates): Prague urgently needs uniform conditions for the care of trees
08.11.2021 18:09 | Press Release
The capital council approved a new methodology for planting and caring for street trees. These are essential principles for quality planning, planting and care of tree lines in city streets in order to achieve the full potential that is expected of trees.
The need for a single document setting out rules for planting and caring for trees in the streets is based on the long-term unsatisfactory condition of trees that cause climate change, stress from difficult habitat conditions, especially high temperature, prolonged drought, poor soil and space conditions. street space, collisions with technical infrastructure and the like. In addition, the administration and care of street alleys is performed by several entities (city districts, the City of Prague, Technical Administration of Roads of the Capital City of Prague, etc.), which have different internal standards and options for the administration and care of trees in the streets. of this situation is the long-term unsustainable condition of the tree line in the capital. m Prague and care for them.
The new Municipal Standard for Planning, Planting and Care of Street Trees is to be implemented across municipal organizations (contributory organizations and joint-stock companies in the City of Prague’s property portfolio) to ensure its practical use in quality planning, design and care of trees.
“Prague urgently needs uniform conditions for tree care. Today we can see how big the differences are between the individual administrators of urban greenery. During the reconstructions or the plantings themselves, there are fundamental shortcomings in the uprooting space, where each of the administrators has otherwise large planting pits, a different substrate and, for example, implements a different plan of the bay. As a result, some trees in the streets suffer rather than prosper. Therefore, this standard needs to be followed by all green capital managers. The aim of the methodology is for all trees to prosper and to reach the full potential we expect from trees in the city, “adds Tomáš Murňák (Pirates), Vice-Chairman of the Committee for Infrastructure, Public Facilities and the Environment of the City of Prague.

Quality planning means not only project preparation, but especially the creation of a tree line system, the significance extends beyond a specific street and creates a functional system within individual districts, ie the entire city. Interconnected street trees are essential for the city in times of climate change and remain part of the city’s infrastructure, which performs the required functions, independently, without the supply of additional energy produced. Tree lines are thus an important element for maintaining the permanent habitability of the city. To achieve the functional units of street alleys is to have a city-wide concept, for which it is necessary to create this standard basic.
