Residents of the New Zealand capital have been found to be the most relaxed in the world, but not all Kiwi cities are as stress-free.
Stress can be an inevitable part of life, but according to a recent study, how great it is can depend on where you live.
According to the Index of Least Stressful Cities 2021 published this month, Reykjavik, Iceland, is the least stressful city out of a hundred cities surveyed, followed by Bern in Switzerland and Helsinki in Finland.
Fourth on the list was Wellington, with the same point as Helsinki (which came in third); 95.0 / 100.
Auckland was in 14th place with 88.2.
The inter-city scores were divided in terms of Covid response, social security, mental health, socio-political stability, and minority equality, while Wellington advanced in categories such as gender equality, economic stress, and traffic congestion.
Not surprisingly, one class in which Auckland beat Wellington was the weather.
The researchers of the study first analyzed 500 global cities according to 15 stress indicators. This was limited to the 100 cities with the most reliable data and ranked according to the score.
Therefore, the list is not so definitive an index of the most stressful and least stressful cities in the world, but rather a classification of the most closely comparable cities.
The 15 stress indicators fell into four key categories: governance, city, economy and health. These included a number of structural and environmental factors that were sometimes overlooked when examining stress, such as weather, gender equality, health care, unemployment rates, and pollution levels.
Several data sources were used to collect the data, including the World Health Organization, the European Commission, the University of Oxford, the Institute for Health Measurement and Evaluation, and the International Labor Organization.
The Covid Response was also assessed on the basis of, among other things, the number of urban cases, the number of deaths per capita and the degree of social freedom from January 2020 onwards. Tokyo ranked highest in 100 cities in this category.
The overall top 10 also included Melbourne, Australia; Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; Innsbruck, Austria; Hannover, Germany; and Graz, Austria.
At the bottom of the scale, Mumbai in India was the most stressful city with a score of 1.00, followed by Lagos in Nigeria and Manila in the Philippines.
According to the statement of the ordering CBD and hemp brand Vaay research, the wish was to show which cities lead to prosperity.
“Our goal with this study is to show what cities can achieve for their citizens through effective governance, strong environmental policies and well-resourced social security systems,” said Finn Age Hänsel, the company’s co-founder.
