Waste collection Prague: Sensors in containers will tell when they should be exported
The municipality plans to place sensors in up to about 7,600 containers. So far, however, I count on 5,700 pieces. The total purchase price will be approximately 55 million crowns. According to the measurement results, the municipality then adjusts the collection frequency. The current procedure follows on from the pilot project Smart Waste Collection, in which 420 sensors were deployed, mostly in underground containers for sorted waste. The city is cooperating with its company ICT Operator on the project.
First swallow
The pilot project ran for a year and a half between 2018 and 2020. Following its evaluation, the Council approved its continuation in a routine phase in June 2020, and a decision was taken this week to increase the number of sensors. “The pilot project showed that each installed sensor was able to generate annual savings of at least 1,261 crowns after deducting operating and investment costs.” Petr Habáň, press spokesman of the ICT Operator, told Blesk.
The sensors will be installed in all underground containers for recyclable waste. Part of the above-ground collectors with a bottom dump will also be equipped with the technology. “With the help of installed sensors, the city wants to monitor the real filling of collection containers before collection and optimize its expenses associated with providing this service. From the financial point of view, these are investments whose purpose is to reduce the operating costs of the city, “says Prague Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates), Mayor of the City of Prague. m of Prague.
A long-standing problem
Overfilling occurs more often with plastic and paper containers. “For glass, metal or cardboard containers, on the other hand, the collection frequency may be slightly longer,” the spokesman added. The funds saved will, on the other hand, be invested in a more frequent collection of plastic and paper containers. “Thanks to the smart collection of waste, it will be possible to operatively adjust the frequency of collection, both in the case of overfilling of collection containers and in the event that the set collection frequency will be oversized for the monitored containers, “adds Matěj Šandor, Deputy Chairman of the OICT Board of Directors.
the amount of waste collected is not negligible at all. While in 2017 about 54 thousand tons were sorted, in 2020 it was already 59 and a half thousand. The largest item last year was sorted paper weighing almost 24,000 tons. performs plastic and glass. Beverage cartons and metal packaging have a negligible value compared to other items, cartons rounded to 1,100 tonnes and metal packaging 630 tonnes.
