The Netherlands to wear against Belgium
The Belgium U20 team lost to the Netherlands for their first match at the U20 European Championship in Coimbra, Portugal. The Belgians led to the mark until the hour mark, before conceding two fateful tries.
As the formula for European tournaments requires, the first match determines the rest of the competition. Belgium and the Netherlands were thus competing for a place in the semi-finals and in the top 4 of this European Championship.
The Netherlands started the game better and passed a first penalty after 4 minutes (0-3). Sanctioned in scrum during the first minutes, the Belgian team rectified the situation and in turn pushed the Dutch to fault. She got a penalty try in 7th before a penalty from Timothé Rifon five minutes later (10-3).
The Oranje would then gain the upper hand in possession but did not really take advantage of it by letting 8 points pass before the break (2 penalties and 1 missed transformation). A try still allows them to return to two points at the break (10-8).
On resumption, the Netherlands put more hands on the ball. Belgium nevertheless keeps control on the hour mark following a new penalty from Rifon (13-11). The match then changed in the space of six minutes: the 3/4 Dutch twice pierced the Belgian defensive curtain to plant two decisive tries in the 61st and 67th minutes (13-25).
The players coached by Alain Gérard and Michaël De Molder were no longer able to reverse the trend at the end of the game and therefore lost by the score of 13-25.
Despite their own, the Belgians find themselves big so versed in the second part of the table of this U20 European Championship. They will face Germany on Wednesday, beaten for its part 18-47 by Spain.
