Swiss champion wins NYC marathon men’s wheelchair race again
35-year-old Marcel Hug from Switzerland added another award to a remarkable year with four gold medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Marcel Hug from Switzerland won the men’s wheelchair race of the New York City Marathon for the fourth time, leaving the field prematurely to win his first title since 2017.
The 35-year-old added another prize to a notable year with four gold medals at the Tokyo Paralympics, including the marathon. He also won the Boston Marathon last month.
Hug, born with spina bifida, finished second in 2018 and ’19 behind the American Daniel Romanchuk. The last defeat came by just a second.
Hug finished Sunday in 1 hour, 31 minutes and 24 seconds, more than 6 1/2 minutes ahead of Briton David Weir on second and Romanchuck on third.
The NYC Marathon is in its 50th edition after being canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The field was reduced by around 40% to around 30,000 runners, with efforts being made to keep the distance between the participants near the start and finish lines.
