Must see today’s games
Many of these games contain really interesting matchups, which makes it almost impossible to predict which of these will be child burners in advance.
Still, these are the games with the best actions and with the most to play for:
11:30 – Chiefs Esports Club vs Rogue
Chiefs have never played globally before and Rogue has not done so since SI20. Together, there are six debutants at this level of play, which includes the very first Kiwis competing outside of Asia and the Pacific. It will be great to see what they all have to offer.
With Oxygen playing Anthony “HOP3Z” Nizzardo instead of the covid-19 positive Davide “FoxA” Bucci, and two of his teammates playing alone in their hotel rooms, this also really opens up for Group A.
While the Chiefs and Rogue were always considered underdogs behind FaZe and Oxygen, both of their paths to the Six Major playoffs have now become much easier, making this Chiefs vs Rogue matchup the key to gaining the early advantage.
16:00 – Team One eSports vs DarkZero Esports
Troy “Canadian” Jaroslawski is back on the global stage. In his big debut events for his last two teams – Continuum (later known as Evil Geniuses) and Spacestation Gaming – he won the entire tournament, so there is really no pressure.
While DZ’s first match of day one comes against Vitality as the opening stream B match, their follow-up is really the one to see when they face the reigning Six Major title holders who knocked them out in a 7-3, 7-3 result line during Mexico’s quarterfinals.
DZ had a tough NAL race during stage 3. However, a win against one would really show the world that they are a serious threat. For one, meanwhile, it’s hard to find a team that is more confident in their own abilities, and sending a message to one of NA’s most popular teams on opening day is definitely a way to prove that faith is justified.
21:00 – Spacestation Gaming vs Team Empire
Finally, fans should line up for SSG vs Empire, another rematch of the Six Mexico Major quarterfinals where Empire won 7-4, 8-7. Since then, Spacestation has added Alexander “Sky” Magor and looks as strong as ever.
As North America’s top-seeded team, many of the region’s hopes and dreams will rest on SSG’s shoulders. An early win in this game will be a great signal to their fans that they can go all the way after NA finished Mexico Major as the worst performing region overall, even behind APAC.
For Empire, meanwhile, it can make them nervous to sit in the death group with three region-leading fraggers – Hotancold, Fntzy and Yass. A solid first match against the best NA has to offer is really what they need to calm their nerves before what is likely to be a very deep run.
People to watch
While it’s a little unfair to put too much pressure on them, a lot of attention during day one will be on the two stand-ins of Ellis “GiG” Hindle and Anthony “HOP3Z” Nizzardo. Both of these only have level three experience as players and will possibly be on their way over their heads.
Although past exceptional performances from Jayden “Dizzle” Saunders during season 8 will come to mind when talking about coach stand-ins, in reality they will probably both take on a support role and strive to only help their teammates instead of collecting stats themselves.
In a completely different way, attention will also be drawn to the two newest members of the English-speaking talent team, Tobias “BikiniBodhi” André and Niclas “Pengu” Mouritzen. After he was announced to join the analysts’ desk, a number of fans were worried about Bikini’s lack of experience in such a role, which means that his debut tomorrow should attract a lot of attention and give him a chance to prove himself to the world.
Finally, Pengu will step into shoes that are impossible to fill as Parker “Interro” Mackay’s co-caster after Michael “KiXSTAR” Stockley’s tragic death last month. This debut is likely to be emotional for many as it will also be Interro’s first time since the accident. For both of these reasons, this will also be a must-have moment for R6S fans.
