«The 2021 edition of the Verdigi prize – comments the mayor Sergio Di Maio – will be even more touching, since too Carla, wife of Andrew and mother of Domenico Marco, he left us. The only answer to this pain is to increase our closeness to the Verdigi association and to Andrea, who again this year carried out the award as president of the association with great commitment and passion. The projects received were all very interesting and it was not easy to have to exclude some of them. We thank those who contributed to the award, from every point of view, and I am happy that the award ceremony can be held in presence again in our theater. There is a need for closeness, to find ourselves and look into each other’s eyes ».
«The Domenico Marco Verdigi award has always been a very special moment for our community – underlines the deputy mayor Lucia Scatena -. Being able to return to the awards ceremony in the presence is significant, doing it in our Rossini theater in Pontasserchio, then, even more. We renew support and association for Andrea and the death of Carla Verdigi, Marco’s mother, a great pain for everyone ».
The Domenico Marco Verdigi award was born in 2005 at the behest of Domenico Marco’s parents, Andrea and Carla, and is linked to the memory of the young Sangiulianese from San Martino a Ulmiano who on 21 August 2004 lost his life in Marina di Pisa after saving two children by the stormy sea. This gesture of incredible generosity earned him the Gold Medal for Civil Merit at the behest of the then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Every year, on August 21, a mass is held in Marina di Pisa in front of the monument in memory of Domenico Marco, where the main local and regional institutions, as well as law enforcement and volunteers, are schooled. The award is aimed at projects of organizations and associations concerning concrete help for children in situations of social, emotional and economic hardship. The award is guaranteed by the Domenico Marco Verdigi association and the Municipality of San Giuliano Terme, has the patronage of the Chamber of Deputies and the Province of Pisa, the patronage and contribution of the Tuscany Region, the regional council of Tuscany, the Municipality of Pisa and the Health society.
