1. FC Cologne | Schmitz: “It was a hard and long fight”
1. FC Köln played 2-2 at home against Union Berlin on the eleventh matchday of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season. After the tie, Benno Schmitz, Mark Uth and Dejan Ljubicic commented on the party.
Benno Schmitz: We have already had experiences with Union Berlin over the past few years. It was a long and tough fight today. We got into the game well, but after the lead we got 1-1 straight away and then got into an unfavorable position shortly before the half-time whistle. In the end, we rewarded ourselves with at least one point for our commitment. The 2: 2 is okay. Tony is in a good mood and his goals are good for us as a team.
Mark Uth: The point is okay. Of course we hoped for more, especially because we played at home. In the first half, we adjusted to Union’s level of play and had no solutions on the offensive. Whenever we got through the outside and flanked, it became dangerous. After mistakes Union was able to score the goals. The coach encouraged us to keep playing forward courageously even after making mistakes. After the last season we are satisfied with the 14 points. It could be two or three more counters. But that is grumbling at a high level. We continue on our way. Now we’re looking forward to the carnival and the international break.
Dejan Ljubicic: We’re happy that we didn’t lose, especially after the game. We planned a lot before the game. But of course we also knew that Union were a really good team. They are very robust on the defensive and strong in duels. In the end we can thank Tony. He’s very important to our team. Still, it’s sad that we didn’t get the three points. We have to analyze what we can do better.
