Highest number of new infections in Austria
Shortly before the introduction of a nationwide 2G rule in Austria, the number of daily new corona infections climbed to a record level.
the essentials in brief
- In Austria, from Monday, only those who have been vaccinated or recovered will be given access to the interior.
- The hospitality industry and tourism regions show understanding for the step.
- The number of cases reached a new high today, Saturday.
According to the statistics from Saturday, 9943 infections were counted – above the previous high of 9586, which had been reached in November of the previous year.
Test is no longer enough
In view of the rapidly increasing number of cases and the filling intensive care units, the government announced on Friday that from Monday only those who have been vaccinated or those who have recovered from Covid-19 (2G rule) will have access to bars, events and hotels.
The tourism sector and ski areas are therefore also affected by this partial lockdown for unvaccinated people. The rule also applies to service providers such as hairdressers, massage parlors or nail salons.
The hospitality and tourism industry showed understanding for the step on Saturday: The government had no other choice because of the contagion dynamics, said Robert Seeber, who represents the division in the Chamber of Commerce. “In addition, dealing responsibly with the infection rate is an important signal to our markets of origin, especially to Germany”. Everything must now be done to prevent travel warnings during the ski season.
In Austria, 64 percent of the total population have recently been fully vaccinated. The government hopes that those who are hesitant or indecisive will now decide to vaccinate due to the tightening.
