After tenants have been given notice, the culture committee discusses the purchase of the bunker and alternatives.
Ina Hartwig (SPD), Head of the Department of Culture, speaks of an “unfortunate situation”. The Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (Bima) terminated the tenants of the bunker on Marbachweg at the end of the year. Musicians use it as a rehearsal room. Dietrich Krüger, one of the around 50 tenants, campaigned on Thursday evening in the culture committee with the city council that “the city should make use of its right of first refusal” and purchase the bunker. “There are few cultural sites in Frankfurt where we can rehearse.”
Hartwig regretted that the musicians “got into this situation”. The cultural office is in contact with the Bima and is considering a purchase. One solution could also be to upgrade one of the five bunkers that the city acquired a few years ago. “That could help out of a jam in the medium term.” But one thing is necessary for this: “We need additional money.” 1.15 million euros would be incurred to upgrade a bunker. That would have to be decided by the city council.
All of the factions agreed that the musicians had to be helped. Linke, BFF-BIG and CDU had already submitted applications to buy the bunker. Sylvia Momsen (Greens) also advocated “fighting for the bunker”.
But even with a purchase, the bunker would have to be upgraded. Because the reason for the termination are fire protection deficiencies. “The upgrading of a bunker – whether one owned by the city or one on Marbachweg – does not work overnight,” said the head of the cultural office, Sybille Linke. Short-term solutions are discussed with the Office for Construction and Real Estate. The city also has 150 rehearsal rooms available. “But those who die are well utilized, so you can’t assume that a room will be available there.” Nevertheless, dying tenants should contact the cultural office. “We check whether something works in individual cases,” said Linke.
In order to gain time initially, Jutta Ditfurth (Ökolinx) suggested trying to extend the notice period by three months. She criticized that fire safety regulations were often used as a pretext to “suddenly sell privately or otherwise use” a building.
She also referred to the Glauburgbunker. “He was beaten up on an investor who builds luxury apartments. There are enough of these in Frankfurt, ”she said. “An opportunity was missed.”
