Two Madeirans represent Portugal in the ‘Heroes of Hope’ – DNOTICIAS.PT

Portugal will be represented at the ‘2022 Global Heroes of Hope’, an initiative of the American Cancer Society, by two Madeirans. Sara Cachuxo and Marta Caires were nominated by the Madeira Regional Nucleus of the Portuguese League Against Cancer, as the most recent ‘Global Relay For Life’ ambassadors, for the example of those who achieved a personal victory over cancer and encouragement and support in fight against the disease.

“The ‘Heroes of Hope’ symbolize the courageous struggle of all cancer patients as they deal with the physical and emotional of their journey through this disease, inspiring those who are still fighting this battle and reinforcing the mission to find a cure. the face of the global community-based fundraising project Relay For Life that brings together at the American Cancer Society many other cancer-related institutions, societies and associations in different countries, including the Portuguese League Against Cancer in Portugal ” , refers to a note from the Madeira Regional Nucleus of the Portuguese League Against Cancer.

According to the same note, this project began in 1985, in the United States of America, “when surgeon Gordy Klatt organized his own fundraising initiative to bring cancer visibility, raising more than $27,000 and demonstrating that a only one person can make a difference. Today, Relay For Life is the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world.”

“Sara Cachuxo was the local responsible for the Relay For Life project in Porto Moniz from December 2, 2018 to June 2, 2019, having organized several events to raise money to help people with cancer and to raise awareness about different types of cancer. Similarly, Marta Caires has been a visible face of Relay For Life in Madeira, through the testimony of her personal experience as a cancer survivor”, she says.
