Midwives strike in Toulouse: the maternity unit of the Croix du Sud clinic still closed
Due to the midwifery strike, the maternity ward of the Croix du Sud clinic is still closed. The negotiations of this Thursday, November 4 did not make it possible to find an agreement between the management of the establishment and the midwives. Future mothers are redirected to other hospital sites and are invited to dial 15.
Discussions took a good part of the day of this Thursday, November 4 at the Croix du Sud clinic (located in Quint-Fonsegrives near Toulouse) between the striking midwives and their management. But they haven’t spoken yet. A delegation was first received in the morning by the director of the structure, Jean-Pierre Perrigaud. The two parties having each made proposals, they had agreed to meet at 6 p.m. But here again, additional negotiation time will be needed to reach an agreement. A new meeting could take place this Friday, November 5. In the meantime, the maternity ward of the establishment remains closed and parturients are invited, until further notice, to dial 15 which redirects them to another structure.
In the meantime, some of the strikers were received by the director of the Haute-Garonne departmental delegation of the Regional Health Agency (ARS Occitanie), Thierry Cardouat. All parties hope to have ministerial announcements that will be applicable to both public and private sector midwives.
The maternity ward of the Croix du Sud clinic had closed its blocks as of Tuesday evening 6 p.m. A decision taken by the management of this establishment of the Ramasay Générale de santé group who feared that they would not have enough midwives in the delivery room from the start of the strike on Wednesday, November 3 at 8 a.m. Each year, nearly 2000 deliveries are carried out in this clinic.
The third maternity hospital closed in a month
A few days earlier, the midwives of the Rive Gauche clinic in Toulouse (group of independent clinavenir clinics), on a surprise strike for the long weekend of All Saints’ Day, had forced their management to close the maternity units. In this clinic, the first in number of deliveries for the private sector in Toulouse (3,800 per year), the activity of the birth sector only resumed Thursday morning, after 5 days of strike.
As early as Monday evening, the Regional Health Agency (ARS Occitanie) had indicated to seize the Public Prosecutor for non-response of strikers to requisitions, recalling that all establishments were “required to maintain the continuity of care within the framework of their public service mission “. All the parturients of the two closed maternities were invited to the composer on the 15th and were redirected to other establishments.
For several months, throughout France, midwives in the public have been calling for salary increases and better recognition of their skills. The midwives of the private sector of the Toulouse metropolitan area, explaining that their salaries were lower than those of their counterparts in the public sector, raised the tone by asking their management to improve their working conditions. Three maternities have therefore closed their delivery rooms since October, at the L’Union clinic, the Rive Gauche clinic and the Croix du Sud clinic.
