Kendal Amateur Boxers go to Sweden for a multinational tournament
TWO of Kendal’s foremost young boxers will compete in a multinational competition in Sweden.
Eddie Kaye and Jake Green, both 15 years old, are members of the Kendal Amateur Boxing Club and will fight in the “King of the Ring” tournament in Borås Sweden.
This event is Europe’s largest and one of the world’s largest tournaments for male boxers with approximately 500 athletes from over 20 nations.
Eddie, which takes place from 5 to 7 November, will compete in the 65 kg category while Jake will fight in the 57 kg category.
Jake Green said: “I love to travel and I love to box.
“The King of the Ring” gives both.
“The atmosphere and experience will be second to none.
“I just want to do my best and enjoy the moment.”
Eddie Kaye said: “This is the first time I’m attending such a big boxing event, but I’m convinced I have the skills to do a good job.
“I’m really looking forward to getting in the ring and showing what I can do.”
The quality of Kendal ABC Team was seen when they last fought at the HSK Box Cup tournament at Hilleröd Denmark in October 2019, and came from there with two gold and one silver.
Head coach Alan Willoughby, who will accompany the two young boxers, said: “I was delighted to have received such an award in recognition of the club’s past achievements and to be invited to this very prestigious event.
“This is going to be a great experience for Jake and Eddie. I have full confidence that they will both do well.”
Since pandemic restrictions have been lowered, the organizers of the ‘King of the Ring’ tournament have invited Kendal ABC to participate in this year’s event.
Mr Willoughby thanked Dan Kacprzyk of Fish Express in Kendal for his kind sponsorship of the club for many years and how appreciative the club members had been.
Yak Hussain MBE from Blackburn ABC, and a judge at the tournament, will also accompany the team to Sweden and assist Alan in the corner.
Kendal Amateur Boxing Club was founded in 1974 by Alan Willoughby.
With a membership of 30 from 11 years to 30 years, the club has produced many regional ABA champions over the years.
