Prague – This year, Christmas markets on Prague’s Old Town Square will be decorated with spruce from the Liberec region. The tree is 21.5 meters high and grew on private land in one of the villages near Jablonec nad Nisou. The owner of the tree decided to cut down for security reasons. Hana Tietze, a spokeswoman for the Taiko company, which organizes Christmas markets in the metropolis, told ČTK. The tree should light up on Saturday, November 27, when the Christmas markets will also begin.

Although the tree is not one of the tallest ever in the center of Prague, it is still branched. The conifer has already examined the dendrologist and according to preliminary reports he is OK. “It is partly a matter of prestige, it becomes the most famous Christmas tree in the Czech Republic every year. This year it grew over a hundred kilometers northeast of the Old Town Square, which it will decorate until the beginning of January,” said councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09).

The Christmas tree will be lit for the second time by the city company Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP). “We plan to cut down the tree on the penultimate Sunday of November so that it can shine in front of the Týn Cathedral in Prague on the first Advent weekend,” said Tomáš Jílek, Director of THMP.

Christmas markets will return to the Old Town Square after the final outage caused by the covid-19 pandemic. They will start on Saturday, November 27, and last until Thursday, January 6, 2022. Last year, due to the covid pandemic, the markets did not take place in the nearby Wenceslas Square, where they usually also live. Last year and this year, the Easter markets did not take place either.
