Berlin-Spandau writes history: She is the first woman as mayor – after 99 men – districts – Berlin
Flowers, applause, nice words: shortly after 6 p.m., history was written in the town hall of Berlin-Spandau on Thursday evening. Carola Brückner, 58, SPD, was elected the new mayor of the district (245,000 people) – the first woman after 99 men in the town hall office.
In the election campaign you were just ahead of Frank Bewig, CDU. But in the last week a majority had been found, including with the CDU. Here you read Die full story in the Spandau newsletter from Tagesspiegel with all department cuts, with all 6 mini portraits, all parliamentary group leaders and all backgrounds.
And so Brückner got 51 of 54 votes in the election for mayoress. Bewig got 52 of 54 votes. He is the new, old vice-boss in the district and BECOMES the new city councilor for schools, culture and sports. Most recently, he was responsible for the top departments of health, transport and construction.
Spandau’s district chief Brückner neue previously worked in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, where she headed the basic department for equality for people with disabilities. She has been a member of BVV since autumn 2017 and sits on the Education and Inclusion Committee. As mayor, she is also responsible for the finance, economy, buildings and personnel departments; With around 2000 people, the district office is one of the largest employers in the district.
The transport and urban development department remains in the hands of the CDU. City councilor was Thorsten Schatz, most recently the personal advisor to CDU boss Kai Wegner. He has been a member of BVV for ten years.

The SPD politician Gregor Kempert – top man from the Senate’s education administration – will be the new city councilor for social affairs and citizen services. An area in which a lot of money will be invested in the next few years. It achieved the highest approval with 53 votes in favor and 1 abstention. The new city councilor for youth and health is Oliver Gellert, previously leader of the Greens in Spandau.
The sixth city councilor is still missing: Andreas Otti, AfD, should take care of the public order office (garbage, wrecked cars, parking offenders, traffic turnaround, noise on the Havel), but was punished in the first ballot with 45 no votes and 9 yes votes. He has been the city councilor responsible for buildings since 2016 – an area that is constantly under criticism. In the second ballot he received even fewer votes. 46 no votes and 8 yes votes.
In the run-up, various politicians had already indicated that Otti would not be elected to the new district office. The council of elders was convened, the decision was postponed. Exit open. In the evening, shortly before 9 p.m., Otti also received his discharge certificate. Mayor Brückner announced at 9.15 p.m. that SPD City Councilor Kempert will take over his work area for the time being. And then it was over. The district office is able to work.
