World Forum for Democracy 2021: “Can democracy save the environment?”
The World Forum for Democracy will bring together intellectuals, politicians, activists, experts and young people from around the world from November 8 to 10 to respond to the question “Can democracy save the environment” after a year of global online debate on democracy and environment.
Meeting at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the participants will discuss the following points themes:
- National governments, international organizations or citizens: who sets the pace?
- What style of governance is best placed to meet the environmental challenge?
- Public or private: what role for each sector?
- Multilateral Organizations Tackle Global Problems With Global Solutions
Ten laboratories, designed to address challenges in different forms and showcase some of the measures already taken, will help provide a democratic response to the issues raised throughout the Forum. The Council of Europe Democratic Innovation Prize will be presented at the closing session at the most popular initiative in these laboratories. In parallel, Forum Discussions will be organized on: Deliberative democracy for climate, Human rights for the environment, Threats to environmental defenders, Youth climate activism, Biodiversity, climate change and a healthy environment: links, as well as on #EnvironmentRightNow, an initiative of the Council of the European Parliamentary Assembly.
“Twelve months to answer 1 question”
The campaign, launched in November 2020, covered the following themes: Human Rights for the Environment (December 2020), Deliberative Democracy for Climate (January 2021), Disasters, Displacement and Climate Change (February 2021), Inequalities, Democracy and Change climate change (March 2021), Local environmental action (April 2021), Defending the defenders (May 2021), Children and young people leading the fight against climate change (June 2021), The environment and the economy (July 2021) , Technology, environment and democracy (August 2021), Greening democratic institutions (September 2021), The future of energy (October 2021).
Bike for Democracy
13 short films show individuals behind initiatives from environmental and community groups around the world, who have been selected for the Forum. These initiatives in France, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, Israel, Indonesia, Kenya or Brazil aim to promote eco-citizenship, education in environment, the legal emancipation of rural populations, participatory democracy or ecology as an instrument of peace.
The Forum, which will be fully broadcast live, is organized by the Council of Europe, in partnership with the City of Strasbourg, the European Collectivity of Alsace, the Grand Est Region and the French Government.
