Toulouse: from Saint-Pierre to the university, rue Valade will be redone
The redevelopment project of rue Valade, between Place Saint-Pierre and Capitole University, in Toulouse, has been launched. The goal is to create a secure cycle path instead of the parking lot.
A little less room for the car in the city center and a little more for cyclists and pedestrians. This development, which Toulouse shares with other large cities, at the pace desired by the municipality, continues with the redevelopment project of rue Valade which rests on Place Saint-Pierre at Toulouse 1 Capitole University. A project that began with a public meeting organized on October 16 by Julie Escudier, district mayor, and Maxime Boyer, elected in charge of cycling, and a consultation on the site jeparticipe.toulouse.fr which ends on November 2.
The objective is less ambitious than the redevelopments already carried out by town planner Joan Busquets and that planned for rue de Metz, which will be pedestrianized. Cars always drive in the direction of Saint-Pierre downtown. But cyclists will take a cycle path towards Saint-Pierre, on the university side, instead of the parking lots. Today, bicycles have the possibility of going up one way but the narrowness of the street and the important road traffic of 4000 vehicles per day encountered this dangerous passage.
The cycle path will be bordered by a flower bed with six trees and vegetation. Part of rue Valade, from Saint-Pierre to Saint-Pierre-des-Chartreux church, will be paved.
Oldest tree in town
On the Place Anatole-France side, parking will be reviewed. Around the large plane tree, which is the oldest tree in the city with a plantation that dates back to the end of the 18th century, the squares will be called. The project plans to vegetate the foot of the tree and provide chairs.
During the consultation, 37 Toulouse residents, mostly residents of the neighborhood, expressed their views. Several have asked for a limitation of automobile traffic with the installation of entry terminals. Others would like parking to be reserved for residents at night. Of the 90 places, only half should remain.
