Red Bull Salzburg: coaching center for the Bundesliga
VBefore the engagement of Florian Kohfeldt, the responsibilities of VfL Wolfsburg allegedly also thought about Matthias Jaissle as the new coach. The former Bundesliga professional from 1899 Hoffenheim has been training Red Bull Salzburg since this season and could win the Austrian series champion on Tuesday evening in Wolfsburg (6.45 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Champions League and at DAZN) for the first time in the knockout round of Champions League lead. How long the 33-year-old will stay in Salzburg is open. In the last 15 years, however, numerous well-known and surprising names have made the leap from there to the Bundesliga.
Hansi Flick: The current national coach was an assistant coach in an illustrious team of coaches for a short time in 2006. His boss was called Giovanni Trapattoni, and Lothar Matthäus was the first co-trainer. But after two months the Flick switched to the DFB for the first time. He won the Champions League with FC Bayern Munich in 2020.
Niko Kovac: World Cup participants with Croatia, DFB Cup winners with Eintracht Frankfurt, German champions with Bayern Munich – Niko Kovac already has some successes as a coach. His career began in 2009 in the youth field and in the 2011/12 season as assistant coach of RB Salzburg. He has been coaching AS Monaco in the French league since 2020.
Roger Schmidt: In the 2011/12 season he caused a sensation with SC Paderborn in the second Bundesliga. The new Red Bull sports director Ralf Rangnick brought him to Salzburg from there. Schmidt won the Austrian championship with the club and uses it as a springboard for stations such as Bayer Leverkusen, Guoan Beijing and PSV Eindhoven.
Oliver Glasner: The current trainer from Eintracht Frankfurt had great success at VfL Wolfsburg and Linz ASK. However, he took up this profession in Salzburg. RB brought the business graduate and long-time first division professional first for management. Rangnick then made him co-trainer for Roger Schmidt.
Adi Hütter: The coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach took over Salzburg before the 2014/15 season, won the championship and cup straight away – and said goodbye after just one year. As a reason, Hütter said at the time: “I don’t see myself as a training coach in the future.” He got into the Bundesliga through Young Boys Bern.
Marco Rose: They are particularly proud of one success in Salzburg: winning the UEFA Youth League for U19 teams in 2017. The coach’s name was Marco Rose, and he later reached the Champions League and the European Championship for the first time with the Red Bull professionals League semi-finals. German clubs fought for him, he first went to Mönchengladbach and this summer to Borussia Dortmund.
Jesse March: Rose’s successor in Salzburg was similarly successful there with two championships, but has so far had bigger problems in the Bundesliga. The American march is only eighth in the table with RB Leipzig and is about to end in the Champions League. On Saturday he and Rose meet at their club in Leipzig.
