Austria – Commemoration of Victims of Terrorism – Politics
One year after the terrorist attack in Vienna, Austrian politicians thought of the victims. On the evening of November 2, 2020, a 20-year-old opened fire in a busy nightlife district and shot four people, injuring more than 20. The attacker was killed by police gunfire nine minutes after the attack began. As a consequence of the attack, the protection of the constitution was reformed and deradicalization measures in prisons were improved. In addition, a compensation fund with 2.2 million euros for victims of terrorism was set up. However, the investigation into the perpetrator’s possible helpers has not yet been completed. Lawyers did not criticize the state for apologizing for investigative margins. The perpetrator had served a prison sentence until the end of 2019 for trying to join the terrorist organization Islamic State. After his release, he met with other Islamists and tried to buy ammunition. A commission of inquiry has since found that. Investigators were aware of these activities but did not take timely action. Public prosecutors are investigating the protection of the constitution because of possible criminal errors.
