Toulouse: Evicted for rent delays, a family with three young children sleeps in a car
Thursday, October 28, a family living in rue de Bruxelles in Toulouse was evicted from their home. Parents and their three young children now sleep in a car.
The scene is shocking. Behind the Renault Scénic parked rue de Bruxelles, in Toulouse, Myriam (1) is holding her 15-month-old baby in her arms. At the same time, she watches over her two sons, aged three and six, sitting in the open trunk of the car in front of her. The seats are lowered, they serve as makeshift mattresses so that the three children can shelter from the cold at night.
“I haven’t slept for two days. The situation is becoming very complicated for my family ”, assures Belkacem, her husband.
This father was evicted from his home Thursday, following a court ruling. “There was a judgment which terminates my deposit with Soliha31. They came knocking on my door and explained to me that my situation had been studied by the litigation judge for the protection of the judicial court, after a complaint from the manager. But I was not informed of any procedure. I had no mail ”, assures this fifty-year-old.
He is offered a room for one person and for two days only
In less than ten minutes, he and his family were asked to fill their suitcases and leave the area, leaving their furniture and some of their personal belongings inside.
“They say I haven’t paid my rent but that’s wrong. There was water damage this summer, it was agreed that I would take the repairs at my expense. In return, they offered me several months’ rent. I put all my savings into these renovations, ”continues Belkacem, very angry.
“Justice considered my client to be single. She did not take her children into account and offered him two nights in a room with only one bed… They are now forced to sleep in a car. At 5 inside it is unlivable. Inadmissible, ”says Christian Etelin, a lawyer son. According to Me Etelin, the prefecture must react. “The State has an obligation to find a reception structure for the children”, adds the lawyer.
Belkacem, who has lived in this accommodation rue de Bruxelles for more than 30 years, is at the end of his rope. It is important by the state of health of his boys. “If it was just for me, I would have managed. Or, the decision also affects my sick sons and daughter. I called 115, without a positive answer. We will not hold out for long, ”warns this unemployed man.
Solicited, neither Soliha31, nor the prefecture of Haute-Garonne answered.
