Near Toulouse. This municipality will (partially) turn off public lighting for a year

Since this Friday, October 29, 2021, Blagnac, near Toulouse, is experimenting with switching off public lighting between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. in the morning. The test will last a and concerns only three sectors of this municipality of nearly 25,000 inhabitants.
Big savings
Blagnac follows in the footsteps of other cities stored at the gates of Toulouse. This is particularly the case of Tournefeuille and Colomiers which, since 2015, partially extinguish (the main axes remain lit) the street lamps between 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
Thus, every night in Colomiers, 50% of the public lighting park is shut down. ” It happens 115,000 euros in savings per year ”, specifies the municipality on its website.
A measure to “promote biodiversity”
While the operation is financially attractive, it is also of environmental importance. For the town hall of Blagnac, this experiment for but to “control energy consumption, preserve biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and light pollution”.
“This action aims to protect the environment and promote biodiversity because, the phenomenon is confirmed by numerous scientific observations, artificial light causes disruption of the life cycle of flora and fauna”.
According to the municipality of Blagnac, “studies have shown that turning off public lighting at night has no impact on road safety and crime”.
Which sectors are affected?
This test will be carried out for one year, i.e. until October 31, 2022. In order to have a representative study, three sectors will participate in this experiment: a sector of craft activities, a residential district and another close to a preserved natural environment near the banks of the Garonne and the Quinze Sols.
“A first assessment will be carried out at the end of winter in order to continue the device or to adapt the methods”, adds the town hall.
