State Institute of the Russian Language named after A.S. Pushkin summed up the results of the study “Word of the Year”. It is reported by TASS from the press service of the educational institution.
The study was based on the texts of Russian-language media and publications on social networks; it was carried out in several stages. As a result, they experimented that the word “Sputnik” in 2021 was used nine times more often than before. The increase in the frequency of its use is associated with the introduction of the Russian vaccine against COVID-19.
The second place was taken by the word “Afghanistan”. As the Doctor of Philology, Vice-Rector for Science of the Pushkin Institute Mikhail Osadchiy explained, this is due to the sensitivity of this topic for Russia, “since many people also remember the withdrawal of Soviet troops.” The third place in the ranking was taken by the phrase “Nord Stream”, the frequency of use of which has increased fivefold over the past four years.
The top 5 most used words also include “census” and “impeachment.” In addition, experts noted an increase in the use of the words “QR-code”, “anti-vaccine” and “anti-virus”.
Earlier, the compilers of the Oxford vocabulary vax (“vaccine chose, chose” vaccinate “) with the word 2021. According to experts, it was he who was most often used by English-speaking people. “A relatively rare word in our corpus before this year, by September it was used almost 72 times more often than at the same time in 2020,” the experts noted.
