Liva from Stavanger is a midwife
Behind racks, transmitters and the superstar you can glimpse Liva Austad Sværen. Before she became Sigrid’s bassist, she had to quit her regular job as a midwife.

If I say yes to it, my life will be something completely different from what I am doing now and what I have imagined it to be.
There were other thoughts that struck Liva the offer. The offer to jump into one of Norway’s biggest bands, behind one of Norway’s biggest artists, on the biggest stages in the world. From Wembley to the NRK roof at Lindmo last week.
The first thought was: What about the quick work as a midwife?
Or as Liva herself says:
– MEN CAN WITH THE JOB !? But sir, I could not say no to that. You just have to jump into it, see what happens. Of course I said yes.
Bass or babies?
Liva Austad Sværen has in the last year been the first face to meet newborn children in Copenhagen. With a permanent job as a midwife, the road was actually set, a path in life chiseled out and ready for times.
But then Liva became Sigrid’s bassist.
– It was a huge shock for me, in fact, she says.
She had at least two hands in the air in the show of hands to inaugurate a bassist in the band. She knew the guitarist in the band from the folk high school, the drummer from a little here and there in a Norwegian music environment that is not terrible large.
The requirement? Play bass and choir.
– And I know both things, Liva states and laughs.

Do not be like Liva
She has studied music at Bjergsted, a year of music at folk high school and has been active in the band Soft Punch since 2015.
– I still took the midwifery education because I thought it was exciting. At the same time, I feel that the musical dream I did not dare to have is suddenly fulfilled, she says.
– But you have no music education other than that, do you?
Liva goes on to say that jazz is a great soul and source of knowledge, but it is not true, but at the same time very exciting, but it just does not become a master’s degree in music in this life.
– Do you understand? she ask.
– I think so?
– My point is that what I have done is not a formula to strive for. In the media, it is often taken out of context that musicians say that you do not need education to make it happen. I mean a good music education can be, no, eh very important, she says.
– In short: I do not want to go out and say «drid in taking a university degree in music! You can just become a midwife and then become a musician! «. I have not answered any of this, says Liva.

– Thrown me on a driving bus
For five months she has commuted between Copenhagen and the world. The highlight is several. The first thing she comes up with is …
– The Reading and Leeds festivals. 80,000 it was the day we played. A number I can not imagine, says Liva.
– Asså. You are quite high up in the first place. Then you see people flocking like ants. I just thought “there will be more, I have to remember what to play !!,” says Liva.
Liva describes the new band, who sit as down-to-earth people, grateful for the opportunity and not least that they are finally allowed to travel and play again.
– They are very good to have when the Stavanger girl feels that the world is getting a little too big, says Liva with a dialect and laughs.
– It’s very delicious. I have thrown myself on a running bus with an established group and artist. I have skipped many levels, in all humility, she says.
… and suddenly you are back in Stavanger
Even if you travel the world and play for tens of thousands, it is not always the food, the living rooms, yes, the general needs, live up to the standard that is set from the edge of the stage.
– Suddenly you are backstage at Metropolis again, says Liva.
Liva describes a good and safe musical upbringing. A city full of scenes and opportunities within reach for those who want and want.
– Stavanger has been a good size with a lot of leeway. The culture school has been good, Metropolis, Skysing, UKM … There has always been room to play and learn, she says.
– When can we see you fill Metropolis again?
– I do not even know about half of the plans for the future. First it will be, among other things, Oslo Spektrum, and then I look forward very, very much to being able to play in mine off with the gang I’m so very, lucky to play with, she concludes.
