Antwerp artists draw portraits with skin colored pencils in all shades: “Not all children find themselves in our school books” | Antwerp
ANTWERPThe ‘Forward in Color’ campaign was held in various Flemish cities this weekend. The Antwerp socialists also took part. At the Dageraadplaats, passers-by could have their portrait drawn by professional local artists. The portraits were drawn with skin colored pencils in different shades, which were previously distributed by Vooruit in schools in Ghent and Leuven.
“Not all children find themselves in the textbooks, reading books, or the pictures on the wall in the classroom”, alderman for equal opportunities Karim Bachar (Vooruit). “The same goes for colored pencils. Children often unconsciously turn to the salmon-pink pencil when drawing themselves or others.”
With the skin colored pencils promotions, Vooruit wants to make sure that no species feel different. “These pencil sets ensure that when they can change themselves from their children, they change the color that really suits them.”

“In the classroom of children about what society looks like, it is important that diversity in our society is addressed from the start. Antwerp has been a super diverse city for decades, so it is likely that knights and princesses with many different colors live here.”
The skin color coloring is also a useful tool for teachers and parents to start the conversation about racism and discrimination with children.
