A powerful solar flare brought a unique phenomenon to Lithuania
Interestingly, this phenomenon, even if it occurs, is often almost invisible to the naked eye, and special techniques are needed to highlight it.
M. Ilčiukas says that the Northern Lights are rarely observed in Lithuania, favorable conditions must be created: a powerful solar flare, which causes an electromagnetic storm, must still be dark, so it would be difficult to observe the lights on summer nights. Clear skies are also a prerequisite.
Solar activity and geomagnetic storms are measured in points – the KP index, which jumped to 7 last night.
To observe this phenomenon, a camera with a night shooting function (preferably a mirror) and a tripod that ensures the stability of the shooting are necessary, as it may take 20-30 seconds to take one photo, sometimes more. In this way, the camera collects a lot of light and highlights what the eyes cannot see.
